The old way of breaking for lunch in RTP may have looked something like this: 12 o’clock hits and you need to make a mad dash to the nearest fast food joint only to then turn right around and eat at your desk alone or in the office breakroom. Let’s change that.

As we head back to work, whatever that may look like, let’s rethink how we use our lunch hour. Every Thursday from 12pm to 2pm Boxyard RTP will have a live acoustic singer-songwriter on the BeatBox stage. The artist(s) and genre will change each week, but the intent will stay the same. Try ordering some food ahead of time, enjoying the fresh air, and giving yourself the time (and permission) to recharge during this well-deserved break in the day.

Our musical performances happen rain or shine under our covered Pavilion on the BeatBox stage. In the event of extreme weather, such as flooding, ice or lightning, performances will be canceled. Follow us on Instagram for updates on time changes or cancelations.

This Week’s Performer: Lakota John

Lakota John blends styles of the Folk, Blues, Rock & Jazz with slide guitar, banjo, piano and mandolin. He adds in a bit of harmonica, and mixes in part of his Indigenous heritage with sounds of the Native American flute. LJ received two scholarships in 2008 and 2009 to attend Centrum’s Acoustic Blues Festival in Port Townsend, WA. There he participated in a week of guitar workshops and jam sessions, learning in the classrooms of blues masters. In 2009, he joined the Music Maker Relief Foundation, performing as one of their Next Generation Artists, alongside older Bluesmen. Lakota John continues to learn alongside master musicians and mentors to broaden his musical abilities, while incorporating sounds of American Music. “Pembroke’s Lakota John Locklear is a prodigious blues guitarist of Lumbee and Lakota lineage.” – Indy Week.
