“When it looks like the sun won’t shine anymore, God put a rainbow in the clouds.” –Maya Angelou

So, now, this is rest: a roundtable discussion for poets and changemakers to rethink what we need from community going forward. Bring your worries, your words, your wild dreams for the world, and we’ll listen deeply for new ways of showing up for one another. Our conversation will be grounded with guided breathwork, poems resonating with the present moment, and some healing remarks from community connectors.

THIS IS REST is taking place in Fullsteam’s private bar on the second floor of Boxyard RTP. Food and drinks will be provided and we’ll close out with an open mic. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Let’s put a rainbow in these clouds.

About Poets’ Playground

Poetry is the writer’s way of breaking free from worn-out language to express deeper truths, but even poetry can start to feel like a job. Poets’ Playground is a sanctuary for poets 16 years and older — especially BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other voices in the margins — to fearlessly play with their words again and unleash poetic evolution in community.

RESCHEDULED: Poets’ Playground Workshop, Book Reading, Open Mic will be rescheduled early 2025.

Hosted by:

Sam Canney

Sam Canney is a nomadic poet, community organizer, and disillusioned entrepreneur with degrees from UNC Chapel Hill.  He is the recipient of the 2024 Brooklyn Poets Fellowship and has published works in Cloudscent Journal’s Best-of-the-Issue, Sonora Review, The Lickety Split, Pinhole Poetry, and Vocivia Magazine, among others. His writing challenges the attachments of late capitalism through tiny revolutions of queer joy. He has taught workshops on poetry as a launchpad for psychosocial empowerment at mental health centers and online. In addition to Poets’ Playground, Sam hosts a roaming nature residency, Unwritten Territories, for writers in the margins to create and connect at the intersection of nature and urban developments.
