We’re finally open and ready to chill out with our community! Drop by Boxyard RTP on June 5 to grab food, drinks, and enjoy some live music. Ally J and her band are bringing you some jazz vibes to kick off the day and welcome you to our space.
About Ally J:
Allison Johnson is a singer/songwriter based in Durham, North Carolina. Originally from Akron, Ohio, she relocated to Durham in 2007. Growing up, she sang in church, but never began realizing her full musical potential until moving to North Carolina. Ally grew up listening to numerous genres and performers, often plucking out what she heard on the piano or guitar: jazz greats like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie; classical musicians like Brahms and Chopin; powerhouses like Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, Al Green and Prince; and countless others. Ally realized that her voice adopted characteristics of some of her favorite musicians; Etta James, Stevie Wonder, and Tracy Chapman. Her “old soul” lends textured vocals and sultry melodies that spin classics into jazzier renditions and her range spans from guttural blues to sweet falsettos and everywhere in between.
“Music is what brings me joy. Beginning with that first note and seeing someone in the crowd close their eyes and vibe with you is a priceless feeling. I’m a ball of nerves every single time I get on stage, but that connection—even if I only make one; that realization that I don’t know that particular person, but we know each other through the lyrics I’m singing, is magic.”
